H.O.R.S.E. Basketball Game

Things you will need to play horse:

  • Basketball
  • Hoop
  • Things to mark your ’spots’

I have seen horse played a variety of ways, but the one that seems most popular is played as follows:

After you determine the order of who shoots first to last…

  • The person who goes first picks a spot on the court, or playing area, and take their shot
  • If that person makes their shot, the next person must make the same identical shot. This keeps going until either someone misses the shot, or it comes back to the first person. If someone misses the shot, they are then given the letter ‘H’. The next person in line then gets to create a new shot.
  • If everyone makes the first shot and it gets back to the original shooter, then he/she gets to pick another point on the court and try to make a different shot. If he misses, then the next person gets to try their own shot, and so forth.

The object of the game is to make difficult shots that other players cannot make. Each time someone misses a shot they get a letter. This keeps going until a player ends up spelling the word ‘horse’. After a player spells the word, they must then sit out until the game finishes. The remaining players continue the game until there is one player remaining who has not spelled the word ‘horse’.

There are also different variations including all kinds of animals, such as pig, goat, dog, cat, fish, etc. The game remains the same, just using different words and letters. The shorter the word, the quicker the game and vice-versa.

Also, more complex players will include hook shots, backwards shot, between the leg shots, layups, and more. be sure to agree on what kinds of shots are acceptable before the game begins.
